Textured Wall Prep and Wallpaper Installation in Seattle
We prepare and wallpaper textured walls in Seattle and the Eastside, including orange peel, knockdown, heavier sprayed textures, and hand-troweled plaster. We assess the texture in person, add a wall liner or a skim coat when the wall needs one, seal and prime, then hang. Estimates are written after we see the wall.
What does textured wall wallpaper installation include?
- Assess the texture. We look at the specific texture in person rather than guessing from its name.
- Smooth the wall when needed. Depending on the texture, that means a wall liner or a skim coat.
- Seal and prime. Joint compound is porous, so a skim-coated wall is sealed before any paper goes up.
- Hang. Panels are pattern-matched one at a time.
- Finish seams and edges. Seams are pressed and corners and edges finished by hand.
- Walk through the result with you. We check adhesion, seams, and alignment before we call the job done.
The full sequence for any job is on our installation process page, and wall preparation before wallpaper installation covers prep in general.
When does a textured wall need a skim coat or a liner?
It depends on how deep the texture is and how forgiving the chosen material is, and we decide on the wall itself. The texture table in our guide to wallpapering over textured walls shows what each type usually needs.
How much does textured wall prep add to the cost and timeline?
Skim-coating adds meaningfully to a project’s cost given the added labor and drying time, typically pushing a project toward the higher end of our standard $3 to $9 per square foot range even for otherwise basic material. A skim-coated wall typically takes a full day or more depending on room size, given the drying and sanding time needed between coats before the wall is ready for priming. We write the estimate after we see the wall, and the cost guide covers pricing by material.
Do you work on popcorn ceilings and textured ceilings?
Popcorn texture is not a candidate for wallpaper without removal first, so removal is a separate step before any wallpaper conversation. In homes built before the early 1980s, the texture should be tested for asbestos before anyone scrapes it. See the popcorn ceiling safety note in our guide.
How do older and newer Seattle homes differ for textured walls?
In newer drywall homes the texture is usually sprayed on, so the steps above apply. Plaster walls are a different case with their own process; see historic home wallpaper installation. If the wall still has old wallpaper on it, removal comes first. For whole-room projects, see residential wallpaper installation.
